1984: Part 2, Ch. 5-8

Throughout these chapters, I was drawn to Winston's plight. He is a man struggling to make sense of the world he lives in, but it won't let him. Winston is different from everyone else around him, even Julia. Julia only hates the Party, but she does not understand why she should be hating them. Winston knows that the Party is trying to destroy thought and individuality, and he refuses to let those go. Freedom, he believes, comes from believing that one's own thoughts and feelings are real and true. However, he is surrounded by people who want to suppress that freedom. I feel bad that Winston can do nothing about it. Yet, despite the risks, Winston continues to do what he feels is right. In that way, I think he is free.
